Pluralism & Diversity Policy
Montclair Academy and the Board of Trustees believe that Diversity and Pluralism are educational imperatives. In accordance with the spirit of its mission and philosophy, Montclair Academy embraces the essential strength of pluralism and diversity in our society and in or school community. For the purposes of this policy, diversity is defined as a state of being different and pluralism is defined as a condition in which minority groups participate fully in the society, yet maintain their cultural differences.
The school seeks to enhance and support the ethnic, racial, cultural, sexual, religious, gender and economic diversity within the school and as best as possible to reflect the diversity of the world outside of our school community among its student and family population, employees and Board composition. The school affirms the use of multicultural approaches in education, fosters respect and understanding for people and experiences of diverse cultures and endeavors to develop a strong sense of justice and social responsibility within our students. The school strives to provide a safe, friendly, warm and caring environment in which parents, students, faculty, staff and administration feel appreciated, known and valued. The school seeks to build connections with the global community and to provide opportunities for our students to learn within and take an active role in the world beyond the school.
Montclair Academy is committed to the implementation of this policy through the following goals:
- Increase the diversity of its families, students and employees
- Represent diversity at all levels of the school community
- Enhance the service-learning program to extend to all grade levels in the school
- Assess the curriculum for integration of multicultural components and sensitivity to diversity
- Provide training to faculty, staff, Board and all school constituents to enhance school-wide multicultural understanding
