the earliest grades with an exposure to Spanish. Students are introduced to the sounds of a different language, basic vocabulary and cultures of Spanish speaking countries. The emphasis is on listening and speaking at the elementary grades and not on actual language acquisition. In fifth grade, students experience a dual exposure program to both the Spanish and Japanese curriculums to help them make an informed decision about which language to study in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Spanish or Japanese becomes a core academic subject for students at the start of sixth grade and the emphasis becomes developing actual language proficiency in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
